Renal effect of Junci herba

Abstract
It is well known that Junci herba, one of the parennial plants obtained from Juncus decipiens Nakai of the Juncaceae family, has been used as diuretics by dispensary of chinese medicine and folk remedies, yet its pharmacological properties has not been fully clarified.
In this experiment, the renal effect of Junci herba was observed in the rabbits by means of intravenous injection of various form of extracts. The experiments were designed to elucidate the renal action of three forms of Junci herba extracts, ethanol extract(JHEE), water extract(JHWE) and petroleum ether extract(JHPE) respectively, and also the renal effect of JHEE was compared with that of chlorthiazide.
The changes of urine volume, pH, urinary excretion rates of Na+, K+ and Cl-, and the clearance of inulin, PAH(p-aminohippuric acid) and osmolarity were measured at an interval of 15 minutes for 2 hours after the treatment of those drugs.
The results of the experiment were as follows;
1. The administration of JHEE(100 mg/kg & 200 mg/kg) to the rabbit exhibited the significant increase of urine volume, urinary excretion rates of Na+, K+ and Cl-, whereas JHWE and JHPE were not shown any significant diuretic action.
2. Some significant changes were observed on the clearance of inulin, PAH and osmolarity after the administration of JHEE 100 mg/kg. The onset of diuretic action of JHEE was slower than that of chlorthiazide.
From the above results, it is speculated that the diuretic effect of Junci herba is due both to the direct action and to the hemodynamic changes in the rabbits.
